  1. In general a “field” department is involved with getting information from consumers. For example, when you go into a town centre you can be asked about which biscuits you prefer. You might even get a product to taste. That is field research in it’s most direct way.

    Another example is consumer panels at manufacturers, ofter involved in giving feedback on products, packaging, promotional campaigns and adverts.
