Introduction to research finalised

Finally, the first year has ended.

The last essay was all in light of SPSS, not an easy subject at all. It is not difficul to generate the results out of the system, but the explanation and understanding of the data is a complete different cup of tea.

I will try put up some separate posts specifically relating to how to read and interpret SPSS outputs sometime in the near future. However for now, the year has ended. The final part of the year consisted of an exam. The main focus on the exam was SPSS, followed by understanding of some key phrases passed throughout the year. At the end we had to write a short essay on a subject outlined in the exam paper.

After 3 hours of writing and thinking, I finally managed to hand in my examwork. Now it is waiting until December for the results. Hopefully the Open University will deliver an early Christmas present!

Measurement; the basics

As explained previously, when asking questions you have to take into account the respondent’s willingness to answer those questions.  In some cases you will have the risk of a social desirable effect, in other words the answers will reflect what the person thinks should be, rather than what they truthfully are.

This is an inherent issue with every survey performed but there are ways to minimise this.

First of all you have to set up your questions based on the following criteria:   Read the rest of this entry »

SPSS Tutorials on my YouTube channel

I have created a couple of SPSS tutorial videos which I will post for now on YouTube and will have better quality available in the near future. Starting with an installation video, in progresses through to a first run of the software and a special video on how to create a simple One Way Table. These videos can be paused to watch the details and have comment boxes explaining critical steps. The One Way Table video shows explanations on how to read the table in the output screen.

For now all videos are silent, let me know what you think if you like audio. You can subscribe to my channel if you are a member of YouTube to keep track of the latest videos.
