What is the best way to conduct market research for a computer repair business?
One common question I get at the moment relates to real world small businesses. The following question comes from a local entrepreneur:
“Me and a friend are considering starting our own computer repair business, however we’d like to carry out some market research before deciding to invest any money. The only strategy we have thought of so far is to stand in a crowded shopping mall and ask people to complete a survey but we doubt this will be effective. I would appreciate any suggestions on other types of market research or confirmation that surveying is a good method and also how many people we should survey to make our data credible.”
How do you find people to take market research surveys?
I received this interesting question from a student at the local college.
“I need to find 50 people to respond to my market research survey for my business class. The questions involve home health care/personal care and services such as homemaking, meal preparation, yard work, transportation assistance, and respite care. Any ideas where I might find people willing to take this survey? ”
What are the best ways to conduct market research for a business on a small budget?
One of the local businesses in my city asked me the following question
“I am starting a business that has not been started yet, and I need to conduct some market research to answer some of the questions about the business. I was thinking about just going to the mall and giving people a questionnaire, but there has to be an easier way. Are there any websites that offer market research solutions for small businesses? I need to create a survey/questionnaire and have a few hundred people answer it. Does anyone know how I can do this. Thank you very much. Yes I am on a budget, but I can spend about $1,000. If I could spend less that would be great, but I do have a little money to spend.”
Why do people do Market Research and What are they hoping to find out?
A student asked me the following question:
Hi, I am doing a business project and one of the questions is: ‘Why do people do Market Research and What are they hoping to find out?’ Can you please help me answer this question. Thanks, I really appreciate your help!
The reason why people / companies do market research is to get a further understanding of their market. With this I mean the field of their business, their competitors and the customers.
How can I carry out good market research?
A friend of mine asked the following question:
“I am wanting to set up a small business selling stuff online although I want to make sure I get pricing/goods right. Does anyone know any really good methods of market research which doesnt involve asking on the street. Thanks”
Questionnaire design
Quoting Stephen R. Covey:
Begin with the end in mind.
It seems a simple phrase, but it takes more thought that it first appears. The questionnaire is the key part of your survey. Asking the wrong questions can be worse than receiving wrong answers. There is no turning back once the questionnaire is out.
Consider the following question: “Do you have a computer?”
Does this mean you want to know if the participant owns one themselves, or has access to one. Perhaps someone uses one at work, but does not have one privately, is the answer to this question yes or no?
What do you mean with computer? Is this a laptop or a desktop? Or does this even include the latest innovations of smart phones, BlackBerry, PDA, iPhone, netbooks etc.
As you can see, such a simple question throws up a whole range of potential pittfalls.
It is therefore important when designing a questionnaire to have these kinds of pittfalls in mind. Every question should be unambiguous and clear.
What is a good way to construct a market research questionnaire?
Regularly I receive questions from people who have read my blog. One reader has asked me the following:
“I’m doing a market research product on the fashion industry. Do male consumers feel as influenced by ethical and fair trade issues in clothing production as females do? I need help with the questionnaire!!”
